Whitesburg, KY — The Letcher County Community Foundation (LCCF) hosted their first Summer Solstice Run on June 22, 2024. The run was a 5k that hosted local and out of state avid runners. The 2024 Summer Solstice Run 5k had two first place overall winners, Mike Hardins and Courtney Hatton.
“A 5k race is a perfect event for the LCCF to start fundraising efforts. It provides a way to share our mission and goals with the community and sponsors,” says Heather Burton, Letcher County Community Foundation Secretary.
LCCF hosted the event at James Wiley Memorial River Park in Whitesburg, Kentucky, and participants ran the Tanglewood Trail. At the event, 37 participants, many from different areas, came together to enjoy nature and support LCCF’s efforts.
“Hosting the event at James Wiley Memorial Park and running Tanglewood Trail helps promote our community and wonderful outdoor spaces in Letcher County…and many [participants] were from out of town. The money will be used to support our community. Every dollar,” Burton says.
The Letcher County Community Foundation—established in Dec. 2022—is an affiliate of the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky, serving to improve quality of life in the Letcher County community by facilitating, through strategic partnerships, the gifting of community donors. The group’s most recent focus has been flood recovery relief and rebuilding the Letcher County community.
